Corona Virus Facts and Delivery Services Update

The Coronavirus is undoubtedly on everyone’s mind at the present. What may be making people’s fears about the current situation in the United States worse is the lack of testing and preparation for which it appears our governmental leaders don’t yet have an answer. Given the fact that we have no idea how Coronavirus is moving among our population in the US, I thought I’d share some facts about the virus, some recommended hygiene regimens to prevent the spread, recommendations relative to our social behavior, and some updates to how Soylent Greens will operate until Coronavirus is no longer as big of a concern to us all.

The Facts

According to the CDC, the following are facts about Coronavirus should be shared, and if we all respect them, we can help mitigate spreading this virus unnecessarily.

Fact 1—Diseases can make anyone sick regardless of their race or ethnicity. In fact, times like these make it abundantly clear that we are all human beings and not simply Asian, Indian, American or the like. Covid-19 doesn’t care about the race, or ethnic group to which you belong. Therefore, we shouldn’t be at all concerned about someone’s race, or ethnicity when talking about someone’s chances of getting it, or transmitting the disease.

Fact 2—Some people are at increased risk of getting COVID-19. People who have been in close contact with known COVID-19 cases are at increased risk.  People living in and/or working in areas with ongoing spreading of the disease are at increased risk. Until yesterday, Maine had zero confirmed cases, and the current one is a presumptive case. Currently, Maine is considered safe.

Fact 3--Someone who has completed quarantine, or has been released from isolation does not pose a risk of infection to other people. See the CDC website for updated information.

Fact 4—You can help prevent, or slow the spread of infection by knowing the signs and symptoms. They are as follows: fever, shortness of breath and cough. If you develop these symptoms and/or have been in contact with a suspected case, then you should call your doctor and/or get yourself checked out too.

Fact 5—There are simple things you can do the keep yourself and others safe.

Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, particularly after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing; going to the bathroom; and before eating or preparing food.

Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth with unwashed hands.

Stay home when you are sick, or are experiencing those symptoms.

Cover your cough, or sneeze with a tissue, throw the tissue away and WASH YOUR HANDS!

Changes to Soylent Operations

In order to ensure we are helping to solve problems during this timeframe and not contributing to them, we felt the need to look at how we are operating and make some changes to mitigate some of these risks. The following changes will be made in how we are operating to achieve our goals of patient and public safety.  

First, we feel that it is important to avoid using cash as much as possible during this timeframe. So, in order to achieve this goal, we will give you 5% off every order for avoiding the use of cash and paying with either CashApp or Venmo. Typically, we pass on to patients the 5% service charges for using a credit card with square, so we will waive that fee if you’d like to use square instead of cash. Further, we have a debit card reader that charges $4 to use, and we will waive that fee for each order as well.

Second, for our regular customers, we are able to essentially do a “hands free” transaction in the sense that you are a verified patient, and we can arrange to leave your package in a pre-determined location at your home. Also, if you are a regular customer, call us and we can arrange to run a quick errand for you too on the way to your delivery, so you don’t have to leave the house. Just indicate what you’d like us to do in the messages section of your order. For example, write “pick us up some pizza, man,” or “need a blunt wrap too.”

Third, we want to make sure that our drivers remain safe, so we may ask if you’ve had any symptoms and arrange a social contact limited transaction. Also, Mike is regularly monitoring his health. Mike currently has no symptoms (no fever (I check every time I go out), no cough or shortness of breath) and is as healthy as a honey badger! Kidding aside, we will continue to monitor the health of the drivers and plan for closures accordingly. We will also forego the usual hugs and handshakes with which we normally greet our customers, and we will temporarily replace those with the Vulcan salute. 

Finally, I’d like to say that we still have a community to serve regardless of whether or not people can, or want to go out at this point. We are going to continue operating through this pandemic as long as we possibly can. We are sourcing some ingredients to make our own hand and surface sanitizing spray and will be giving samples away to people once we have it made up. Stay tuned for more updates.
